Cambridge, MA — May 8, 2025 / Oluwatobi Oyinlola, a Nigerian-born researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by developing the world’s smallest GPS tracking device.
The prototype, measuring just 22.93 x 11.92 mm, has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records, marking a significant advancement in miniaturised technology.
The device’s compact size and versatility hold promise for transformative applications across various sectors, including logistics, security, healthcare, and transportation. Its development underscores the potential of Nigerian innovators on the global stage.

Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani (Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy) lauded Oyinlola’s achievement, stating, “Congratulations, Oluwatobi, on this feat. You have just shown the world that Nigerian youth can!”
Tijani added:
I celebrate Oluwatobi Oyinlola for achieving a remarkable milestone — the Guinness World Record for developing the smallest GPS tracking device ever made.
Long before this global recognition, I had the privilege of backing Oluwatobi’s IoT startup and witnessing firsthand the brilliance and drive he brings to innovation. His journey — now continuing at MIT — is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary potential of our people.
Oluwatobi’s success reinforces our mission to nurture and invest in local talent. As we empower more young innovators to break barriers and lead in cutting-edge technologies, we secure Nigeria’s rightful place on the global innovation map.
Congratulations, Oluwatobi. The world is only beginning to see what you’re capable of.
Oyinlola’s accomplishment adds to a growing list of Nigerian youths making significant contributions to science, technology, and innovation worldwide.
