As healthcare systems become increasingly dependent on medical technology, the demand for biomedical engineering talent continues to grow. Yet access to practical biomedical engineering training, especially for women, remains limited across many parts of Africa.
Working closely with hospitals and healthcare systems across the continent, LifeBank has seen this gap in real time. Through its work improving access to blood products, oxygen, consumables, biomedical equipment, and other critical medical supplies, the company understands how essential biomedical engineers are to keeping healthcare systems operational.
LifeBank launches Orange Army to bridge the Biomedical Engineering skills gap
In response to this need, Quip by LifeBank, LifeBank’s biomedical equipment management platform, established the Orange Army initiative to help bridge the biomedical engineering skills gap while creating more opportunities for women in healthcare technology.

Orange Army is a free cohort-based biomedical engineering training initiative designed to equip female engineers with practical clinical engineering knowledge, hands-on learning experiences, mentorship, and access to real-world healthcare center opportunities. The program runs in structured 4-week cohorts delivered over a 3-month period, with multiple intake cycles designed to train and onboard participants in phases.
At the end of the program cycle, Orange Army aims to complete the training of 150 female biomedical engineers prepared to begin working as biomedical engineering specialists across healthcare centers in Nigeria and Kenya.
The first Orange Army cohort begins training
The May Cohort has now officially commenced, with selected female engineering students, graduates, and early-career professionals beginning their training journey through QuipLearn, Quip’s digital learning platform. Over the next four weeks, participants will engage in practical biomedical engineering modules, guided learning activities, assessments, mentorship sessions, and collaborative discussions designed to prepare them for real clinical engineering environments.
