Nigerian entrepreneur and innovator, Etimbuk Imuk, recently won a €12,000 prize from the Orange Corners Innovation Fund for her groundbreaking work in mushroom farming.
Orange Corners Nigeria is an initiative of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands in Lagos and implemented by FATE Foundation.
Imuk’s business, Mushroom Hangout, focuses on sustainable and eco-friendly farming methods that use agricultural waste like sawdust and rice bran to grow mushrooms vertically, making it space-efficient and accessible to urban farmers. This soil-free and pesticide-free farming method supports environmental conservation and offers a healthier, plant-based protein alternative to animal products.
Ms. Imuk’s work has significant social and environmental impacts, tackling issues like food security and climate change. Through her business, she not only supplies organic mushrooms that meet international standards but also empowers women and youths with training and job opportunities in sustainable agriculture. Her success highlights the potential of agri-business innovation in Nigeria and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals supported by the Orange Corners initiative.
In reaction to her win, Imuk said:
