The Olympic Games are over. The Olympic Flag was handed over Sunday to Simone Biles and Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles, the host city for the 2028 Olympic Games.

After 16 days of thrilling events, and a star-studded closing ceremony held in France’s national stadium and also projected from Long Beach in Southern California, the French capital has handed over hosting duties for the Summer Games to the next city in line: Los Angeles in 2028.

Evidently attempting to show that surpassing Paris isn’t mission impossible, Los Angeles rolled out a skydiving Tom Cruise, Grammy winner Billie Eilish and other stars on Sunday as it took over Olympic hosting duties for 2028 from the French capital.

Cruise — in his Ethan Hunt persona — amazed the crowd by descending from the top of the stadium to electric guitar “Mission Impossible” sounds. Once his feet were back on the ground — and after shaking hands with fascinated athletes — he took the Olympic flag from star gymnast Simone Biles, fixed it to the back of a motorcycle and roared out of the arena.

The appetite-whetting message was clear: The Olympics may be over, but Los Angeles is already in planning mode for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Meanwhile, attention is now slowly shifting to the Paralympic Games to come. From August 28 to September 8th, Paris will host the Paralympic Games for the first time, during which a total of 4,400 athletes will be competing in 549 events.
