Kisawa Santuary feels like the kind of place generative AI might dream up if asked to envision an exclusive eco-luxury retreat: biophilic architecture set on a remote, palm-fringed island, encircled by a swirl of powder-white sands and crystal-clear azure waters. But Kisawa isn’t a fantasy—it’s real.

This luxury boutique hotel is a 300-hectare sanctuary of forest, beach and sand dunes, located on the southern tip of Benguerra Island, which is situated 14 kilometres off Mozambique, on the Eastern coast of Africa. Part of the Bazaruto Archipelago, the neighbouring National Marine Park is home to some of the richest and least explored subtropical ecosystems in the Indian Ocean.

A warm welcome awaits at Kisawa, where hospitality is deeply personal and service leaves a lasting impression—each guest is honored with genuine, heartfelt care. The sanctuary is brought to life by a passionate team of 196 Kisawis, with about 90% hailing from Mozambique, and the rest bringing diverse expertise from across the globe.

Tucked amid eggshell-white dunes and coastal forests of whispering pines and milkwood trees, the residences at Kisawi Sanctuary are far more expansive than mere rooms or villas. Their architecture blends sweeping Modernist curves with pan-African design cues, crafted from natural materials like indigenous grasses and rich East African mahogany.

Kisawa is a combination of 8 one, two and three bungalow Residences, positioned within a 300 hectare stretch of forest, beach and sand dunes. Each Residence has its own private beach, an open-air deck, an infinity pool and outdoor day area. Carefully spaced along the calm cove of Benguerra Island, each bungalow sleeps two guests. Some stand alone, while others are positioned in groups, so family or friends can enjoy a balance of privacy and togetherness.

Kisawa’s Natural Wellness Centre (NWC) comprises a standalone spa and gym. Its design is inspired by the island’s traditional circular village houses and community buildings. The exterior was hand thatched on site, led by Cristiano Pedro Machel, head of all Kisawa thatching teams.

Kisawa means unbreakable, and this clearly defines their commitment to building a bond between people and place, life and land.
