If you are African or a black person from anywhere in the world and you want to build something venture scale I think you need to move to Lagos. Lagos is the largest city in Africa and a 150 billion dollar economy with over 20 million people in a space that’s smaller than New York City. It’s basically New York for black people. From a density perspective you can’t find a better market. It is fully run by very proud black people and a largely responsive government.
Most importantly unlike Nairobi or Capetown it has mostly local capital that means you can build a global business and find funding without a lot of the typical biases you will face elsewhere around the world as a black person.
Now it’s a tough tough place to do business. You need a strong stomach to make it here but as a black person I can assure you that once you can make it here, you can make it anywhere in the world. There is a reason Andela, Flutterwave and Moove which grew to become unicorns or soonicorns were founded and largely built in Lagos.
If you are a talented black person who is building an incredible potentially global business and you want to move to Lagos or explore moving to Lagos, I would recommend checking out Itana and joining as a digital resident on www.itana.africa. They’ve got some incredible resources for entrepreneurs on moving to Lagos and Nigeria in general.
If you want to build a venture scale business I would also definitely recommend applying to our accelerator which is headquartered in Yaba, Lagos : www.acceler8.africa.
