BURN, Africa’s leading manufacturer of clean cookstoves and a pioneer in carbon project development, has secured a US $5 million investment from ElectriFI—an EU-funded initiative managed by EDFI Management Company. The funding will fast-track the rollout of BURN’s ECOA Induction Cooker to over 100,000 Kenyan households.
Equipped with IoT technology and a Pay-As-You-Cook payment model, the ECOA cooker offers a smart, affordable alternative to charcoal and LPG. Designed with low-income households in mind, the appliance allows users to pay in small, flexible installments via mobile money, enabling full ownership within a year. The model dramatically lowers household energy costs while promoting a cleaner, safer home environment.
Over its lifetime, the initiative is expected to prevent 1.4 million tons of CO₂ emissions, contributing to Kenya’s climate goals and reducing indoor air pollution—an often overlooked health risk for millions of families.
Despite Kenya’s grid being over 90% powered by renewable energy, more than 15 million households still rely on polluting cooking fuels. BURN’s CEO, Peter Scott, described the investment as “a game-changer” in addressing this gap:
This funding is pivotal for making electric cooking accessible and affordable for the masses, while cutting emissions and improving lives.
Rodrigo Madrazo, CEO of EDFI, echoed the investment’s broader impact:
Access to clean and affordable cooking is vital for sustainable development. Investments like this also boost local economies through job creation in manufacturing and distribution.
The $5 million ElectriFI investment builds on BURN’s strong track record, which includes prior support from the European Investment Bank and various carbon-finance partners. To date, BURN has distributed over 5 million cookstoves across Africa—spanning biomass, LPG, and now electric models.
This latest milestone signals BURN’s next leap: leveraging smart tech and innovative finance to unlock large-scale, low-carbon cooking across Kenya.
