Over the last 20 years, readers have submitted more than 470,000 images to Smithsonian’s annual photo contest. These photos have transported the world to the far corners of Earth, captured spectacular, split-second moments and showcased fascinating people and unique landscapes. Breathtaking images have been captured by photographers from nearly every country in the world.
This Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest 2025 is open to anyone aged 18 or over.
There are 6 categories: Wildlife, Travel, People, The American Experience at 250, Artistic Images, Drone/Aerial
The competition is free to enter.
• Grand Prize: $2,500.
• The winners of each of the six categories will receive $500.
• Readers’ Choice winner: $500
