The recent Canada launch of Treepz (Africa’s leading corporate travel startup operating in Nigeria π³π¬, Ghana π¬π, Kenya π°πͺ and Uganda πΊπ¬.) marks a significant milestone and transformational moment for Treepz – it validates the global potential of African innovation, challenges the dominance of legacy transport platforms in new ways, and opens opportunities for economic and technological exchange between Africa and North America.

Says Onyeka Akumah (Founder, Treepz):
Here we go! π¨π¦ It is with great joy and excitement that I announce the official launch of Treepz Canada. Guess what? It’s a double celebration because we also secured our first client as well for a 2-year contract – African Impact Challenge which is run by the African Impact Initiative and the University of Toronto. With our first client, we are providing corporate travel solutions, including flights, hotels, ground transportation/vehicle rentals, experiences, and more, covering their traveling groups across South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, and Rwanda.
Also, we were honoured to receive a warm welcome from the Mayor of Brampton, Patrick Brown, who said, “Treepz, welcome to Canada, it is a homecoming, and if you can do it in Lagos, you can do it anywhere in the world.” π. Mayor Patrick Brown hosted the Treepz founders and board representatives at the Brampton City Hall in Ontario.
We are now:
> On 2 Continents – North America and Africa
> Operational in 5 countries including Nigeria π³π¬ , Kenya π°πͺ , Ghana π¬π , Uganda πΊπ¬ and now, Canada π¨π¦
> Operational in 25 cities globally
> Served 6 million (6,000,000 π€― ) customers already
God is awesome π
This journey started in 2019 with only 8 customers on our first day of operations. But today, more than 6 million customers and several organizations have trusted us for their mobility and travel needs, and we delivered. It’s not been an easy journey, but we have shown grit and grace to keep building and never stop.

Here’s what the Canadian launch of Treepz means for the various stakeholders involved:
For users (riders and vehicle owners in Canada):
- More affordable and flexible options: Treepzβs focus on shared, scheduled rides offers an alternative to traditional car rentals, ride-hailing, and public transport.
- Localized innovation: Users benefit from a platform with experience in solving transport challenges in complex urban environments like Lagos, Accra, and Kampala β potentially bringing fresh, efficient solutions to underserved Canadian routes or immigrant-heavy cities.
- Cultural relevance: With a growing African diaspora in Canada, Treepz may offer services (e.g., group rides to community events, church, or markets) that align more with communal mobility needs than Western platforms do.
- Trust and transparency: Its digital-first model emphasizes verified drivers, digital receipts, GPS tracking, and scheduled rides β elements that increase rider safety and accountability.
For investors:
Proof of scalability: Expansion into Canada shows Treepz is not just a local or regional African business but one capable of competing in mature markets. This boosts investor confidence in the resilience, adaptability, and vision of its leadership.
- Exit potential increases: Global operations open Treepz to international M&A opportunities or public listing paths.
- Diversification of revenue: Entering Canada means exposure to higher-income users, reducing dependency on fragile African economies and currency fluctuations.
- Brand legitimacy: Canadian expansion enhances Treepz’s brand equity, making it more attractive for future funding rounds or partnerships.
For Treepz as a company (team, product, brand):
- Technology stress test: Canadaβs developed infrastructure and high consumer expectations will push the platform to upgrade features like route optimization, booking UX, payment integrations, and customer support.
- Regulatory readiness: Navigating Canadian regulations builds Treepzβs capacity to operate in other Western markets. It strengthens internal compliance, data security, and insurance protocols.
- Recruitment & talent access: Treepz can now attract top Canadian or immigrant tech talent, potentially building a dual-continent product team.
- Brand evolution: It transitions Treepz from a βpan-African mobility startupβ to a global mobility tech company, which can be critical for perception, partnerships, and funding.

For the Canadian Transportation Ecosystem:
- Increased competition: Treepz brings a new model that blends scheduled ride-sharing with community-centric travel β potentially filling gaps in suburban or underserved urban areas.
- Boost to multicultural entrepreneurship: Canada benefits from hosting a successful African tech import, supporting its national goals around diversity, innovation, and tech-driven immigration.
- Job creation and gig economy growth: If Treepz launches with local drivers and partners, it could generate opportunities for immigrants or underemployed populations.
For the African tech ecosystem:
- A blueprint for global expansion: Treepzβs move shows that African startups can export innovation, not just import Western solutions. It paves the way for others to follow.
- Diaspora validation loop: Treepz can serve as a bridge between African entrepreneurs and diasporic communities in Canada, opening cross-border opportunities.
- Confidence boost: This shows African-built technologies can compete internationally, raising morale and investor optimism across the continent.
For the underlying Treepz technology:
- Platform stress & evolution: Serving Canadian users (who are tech-savvy, expect high standards, and have fast internet) means Treepz’s back-end architecture will need to evolve.
- Localization engine: Treepz will likely invest in modular tech infrastructure that allows seamless country-by-country rollout β adaptable pricing, regulation compliance, payments, and mapping.
- Improved data intelligence: With higher data reliability and more granular location infrastructure in Canada, Treepz can refine its algorithms and improve its offerings globally.
